Classes
Classes are offered every Tuesday by John and Cara Macdonald. Additional resources and class recaps can be found after each class at: TheTangoBeat.
Fundamentals Class: 7:30 to 8:30 pm
The fundamentals class addresses the underlying concepts, technique, vocabulary, and movements that comprise tango. While instruction is prepared for dancers with some level of experience and understanding of the dance, this is the introductory class for beginners and material will be adjusted accordingly. This class aids newer dancers and dancers from other genres as they develop their skills and transition to Argentine tango.
Intermediate Class: 8:30 to 9:30 pm
It is encouraged that students have at least 6 months of experience dancing Tango before taking the intermediate class.
Practica: 9:30 pm – 10:30 pm
All levels welcome! Practice what you learned in class to music on an open dance floor.
Beginners Class Series
The Beginners Class Series focuses on the basics of tango and is tailored for beginners. It consists of a sequential series of classes designed to start new beginner’s dancing and aide them through the successful transition to the Intermediate level. It is offered on occasion and as demand requests. To inquire about the next opportunity for new Beginner’s, please contact us.
Beginners I – specifically for new beginners, an introduction to Argentine tango: embrace, posture, technique, fundamental movements.
Beginners II – builds on the foundations of Beginners I and introduces new concepts such as paradas, sacadas and ganchos.)
Not Sure about Your Level?
Use your best judgement or Contact Us. If you try one level and decide it’s not right for you, talk with the teachers and you can switch.
Cost:
$60/series or $12/class
$40/series or $10/class (student)
+$5 Combo – take both classes for only an extra $5 per class (not available with the Beginners I series)
*Single-Classes/Drop-Ins: It is strongly encouraged for students to attend all classes of a series as they are progressive and build on the skills and concepts learned in previous classes. Drop-in students are welcome but must be at a comparable skill level to the class. Please consult the descriptions above, the class recaps, and contact us to determine at what level the classes are proceeding.
Milongas and Practicas
Every Friday night, Charlottesville Tango hosts a milonga or a practica.
Milongas are social dances for Argentine tango. They are a great time to dance, try out what you learned in lessons, and meet the greater tango community! Milongas are often preceded by a free lesson, beginning at 8:15 or 8:30. Check the calendar our our weekly announcements to confirm.
Guided Practicas are offered in the format that practicas are offered in Buenos Aires. It’s a time to dance, practice, try out new moves, and discuss what works – and what works better! The host, in addition to DJing, will share an idea, movement, or tool/exercise and will be available to answer questions and offer suggestions. Dancers can rotate partners or work with the same partner through multiple tandas. This is a great bridge for beginning dancers between classes and milongas, and is a great opportunity for more experienced dancers to share their tips and work on refining their skills.
Every Friday Night
9:00 pm – Midnight
Admission $10 per person
Held at the Charlottesville Tango Studio
